Counterpoint and Composition

July-August 2026
More details TBA very soon…

Counterpoint is the study of how two or more melodies combine to form harmony and structure in music. All Western musical styles (classical to rock, jazz to film music) have counterpoint deep in their skeletons. Studying counterpoint is a crucial step for composers to take in their journey to write with more confidence, greater technique, and deeper understanding of why harmony works and how structures in music work.

Participants will learn about basic counterpoint principles and how to write two-part counterpoint exercises. We will then apply these principles in analyzing music from across Western musical history, from the Medieval and Renaissance to modern popular, film, and classical music and everything in between.

Participants will leave having gained a deeper insight in to how Western music works on a deep level, particularly its harmony and structure. They can then apply this to their own compositions and to their listening and appreciation of music they enjoy in their lives.
